Designing the Visionaries in Technology Award

Thayer Design Fellowship

Fall 2017

Challenge:

Design and build a thoughtful gift for visiting speaker Dr. Arun Majumdar.

Solution:

I conceptualized his goal of revolutionizing our energy future by creating an oil drop composed of carbon dioxide and water molecules and sustainable energy.

Skills:

3D printing, jewelry-grade polishing, lathe and milling, laser etching.

When I was told to design a gift for a visiting speaker, I wanted it to feel personal and thoughtful. I did a lot of research into Arun Majumdar, his passions and his visions for the future. One theme that stood out in a number of his TED talks which was "revolutionizing our energy future." His goal is not to move the needle but to totally change the way we do energy. A particular idea caught my eye: creating sustainable oil using the byproducts of its combustion: carbon dioxide and water. After brainstorming with colleague Jeremy Faludi, I decided to try and visualize Mr. Majumdar's quest to take water, carbon dioxide and sustainable energy and turn it into oil.
